Working abroad does not automatically exempt income from Indian income tax.

The tax treatment depends on residential status, the nature of income, and the applicable provisions of the Income-tax Act.

Salary for employment exercised outside India is generally treated differently from salary for services rendered in India. Residential status, place of service, receipt of salary, and applicable treaty provisions matter.

India has provisions for relief from double taxation under Section 90 and Section 91, subject to applicable conditions. An eligible taxpayer may claim relief for foreign tax paid.

Eligible Indian residents with foreign bank accounts, shares, property, or other overseas assets should review the applicable disclosure requirements in the Indian income tax return. Foreign income and assets might require reporting even when tax relief applies.

EXAMPLE

An Indian professional works in Singapore and earns ₹30 lakh during the financial year.

If the professional qualifies as Resident and Ordinarily Resident in India, the overseas salary generally falls within the scope of Indian taxation, subject to the applicable rules and treaty relief.

If the professional qualifies as Non-Resident, the tax treatment differs and depends on the source and receipt of income.

The amount earned abroad alone does not determine the Indian tax liability.

BEFORE FILING AN INCOME TAX RETURN, CHECK THESE 3 THINGS.

• Residential status for the relevant financial year.

• Country of income, place of service, and place of receipt.

• Foreign tax credit eligibility and foreign asset disclosure requirements.
