ChatGPT hits 100 million users,
makes history as fastest - growing platform
OpenAI's ChatGPT is popular, we all
know that. But AI has even broken world records in popularity. ChatGPT has
reportedly reached unprecedented levels of success just two months after its
launch. A recent study by UBS claims that the chatbot has gained 100 million
monthly active users, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in
history. ChatGPT is only a few months old and already causing waves in the
business world.
The Microsoft-backed chatbot's
ability to generate articles, essays, scripts, and poetry has made it a hit
among users, who can access the application for free. To further sustain its
growth and offer a more stable and faster service, OpenAI recently introduced a
premium subscription.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an easy-to-use
artificial intelligence tool that answers questions posed by users with
relevant, natural-sounding answers and topics.
The AI chatbot responds in a
human-like way and it is designed to mimic real conversations. The bot can
explain, recollect what was said earlier in the conversations, elaborate on
ideas, and even apologise when it is wrong.
It can deliver an essay or computer
code in response to queries within seconds. OpenAI has trained ChatGPT on
billions of words and a ton of data from the web.
How to use ChatGPT?
ChatGPT can be only used via a web
page. OpenAI has not yet released an official app for the chatbot.
Is ChatGPT accurate?
ChatGPT is powered by an AI
language model that is nearly three years old - OpenAI's GPT 3 - and the
chatbot only uses a part of its capability. The chatbot answers queries based
on data from the internet, which, as we all know, contains tons of
misinformation and false news.
This of course raises the specter
of disinformation and spamming carried out at an industrial scale. In some
cases, ChatGPT admits to not knowing the answers, while sometimes the bot gives
wrong answers with utmost confidence. The due diligence eventually lies with
the user.
The launch of ChatGPT has given
OpenAI a significant edge over other AI companies. This headstart is expected
to give the AI valuable feedback to continue training the chatbot's responses.
Despite conducting mass layoffs, Microsoft recently announced a
multi-billion-dollar investment in OpenAI. This highlights the importance of AI
for the tech giant.
ChatGPT is also facing flak from
the academic community. The tool has raised questions about the potential for
academic dishonesty and the spread of misinformation. In order to counter that,
OpenAI has created a new tool that helps detect AI-written text. However, they
have acknowledged that the accuracy levels of the tool is still pretty low.
Experts say ChatGPT and related AI
could threaten some jobs, particularly white-collar ones.
Does ChatGPT store conversations?
Yes, OpenAI stores bot’s
conversations with users to improve systems. “As part of our commitment to safe
and responsible AI, we review conversations to improve our systems and to
ensure the content complies with our policies and safety requirements,” as per
OpenAI’s website.
What are the alternatives for
ChatGPT?
While no other AI-driven chatbot is
even remotely popular as ChatGPT, some of the alternatives include – ChatSonic,
WriteSonic, Jasper, LaMDA, and Replika, among others.
Google Planning to Launch ChatGPT
Rival?
Google, the search giant, is seen
as the primary competition to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The Alphabet-owned company will
be conducting an event on February 8 with new services focussed on AI. The
company has not confirmed if this new service will be a direct rival to ChatGPT
or focus on enhancing other existing Google AI platforms like Lens.
